This blog post was written as part of a sponsored media trip with Explore Steuben

The Finger Lakes region of New York is the kind of place you could explore forever and still uncover something new, with countless lakes and charming counties to discover. Steuben County, in particular, is a true standout. From the vibrant streets of Corning to the lakeside charm of Hammondsport, it’s filled with experiences you won’t want to miss.

I’ve spent short periods of time in Steuben County before, but on my recent two-day trip, I finally had the chance to properly explore it, and it completely blew me away. At the heart of it all is stunning Keuka Lake, often called the “prettiest” of the Finger Lakes, and once you see it, you’ll understand why. If Steuben County is calling your name, my advice is to answer it. Here’s the perfect way to spend 48 unforgettable hours in this Finger Lakes gem.

Where is Steuben County?

If you’re not overly familiar with New York State geography, Steuben County may not be very familiar to you, so here’s a little breakdown of exactly where it is. Steuben County is located in the Southern Finger Lakes region of New York State, about an hour and a half southeast of Rochester and just under two hours from Buffalo. It borders Pennsylvania to the south, making it an easy getaway for travelers from both New York and northern Pennsylvania.

The county is known for its mix of charming small towns, scenic countryside, and, of course, Keuka Lake—one of the most beloved of the Finger Lakes. Its largest city, Corning, is home to the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass and the historic Gaffer District. While Hammondsport, at the southern tip of Keuka Lake, has been named one of the “Coolest Small Towns in America.”

Best Time of Year for Visiting Steuben County?

One of the best things about Steuben County is that it offers something unique in every season. While you can enjoy the area year-round, spring, summer, and fall are truly the most magical times to visit.

Spring (March – May)– Fresh blooms, budding vineyards, and fewer crowds make spring ideal for winery visits, hikes, and strolling through Corning.

Summer (June – August)-Warm weather means boating, kayaking, festivals, and long sunny days spent around Keuka Lake and the wineries.

Fall (September – November)-Brilliant foliage, crisp air, and harvest season make autumn the best time for wine tastings, cider, and scenic drives.

Winter (December – February)-A quieter season, perfect for cozy B&B stays and indoor attractions like the Corning Museum of Glass.
