Take a Lakefront Cruise
One of the most iconic things to do in Lake George is to take a scenic cruise on the crystal-clear waters of the lake. I suggest booking your lakefront cruise through Lake George Steamboat Company. They offer several different tours daily ranging in price and length. If you’re looking for a recommendation, I chose their one-hour Fall Mohican Cruise which was a phenomenal option.
As you glide along the shoreline, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Adirondack Mountains, historic landmarks, and luxurious waterfront homes. The caption does a fantastic job of pointing out different points of interest which makes the cruise both exciting and educational. I highly suggest grabbing a seat on the top deck, especially if it’s a sunny day. These are by far the best seats in the house!
Stay at Huttoppia for a Memorable Glamping Experience
For a unique and unforgettable experience in the Adirondacks, consider glamping at Huttopia. This stunning campground offers a perfect blend of comfort and nature, making it an ideal choice for families and couples alike. Here, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Adirondacks without sacrificing modern amenities. Each glamping tent is equipped with cozy beds, a private bathroom, a kitchenette, and a wood-burning stove, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay with a touch of adventure.
After a day of exploring the many things to do in Lake George, I loved getting back to Huttopia. I spent my evening drinking complimentary tea at the lodge, reading books by the campfire, and gazing at the starry night sky. If visiting during the summer, Huttopia Adirondacks also has a beautiful pool and during the weekends their restaurant is open. With its stunning location and top-notch facilities, Huttopia Adirondacks is the perfect place for a fun, memorable, adventurous stay.
Hike Prospect Mountain
You simply cannot visit Lake George and not seek out some of its breathtaking views! For an experience suitable for all levels, I suggest hiking to the summit of Prospect Mountain. This hike is very moderate and you can expect to pass through lush forests, scenic overlooks, and historic landmarks.
The cost to enter Prospect Mountain is $10 per vehicle. You’ll take the Veteran’s Memorial Highway up, which is a beautiful drive in itself. There are three overlook points- my personal favorite was the first one, but they’re all worth stopping at. Eventually, you will reach a large parking lot, where your short hike will begin. Be prepared for some steep incline to reach the top. But again, the panoramic views that stretch for miles are beyond rewarding to witness! Take a moment to appreciate the stunning scenery, capture photos, and relax at the summit’s picnic area. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply looking for a leisurely outdoor activity, hiking Prospect Mountain is one of the best things to do in Lake George.
Spend Time at Shepard Park
Shepard Park, which is right on the shores of Lake George, is a picturesque destination that offers a variety of recreational activities for the whole family. Located right in town, this is a great place to head after lunch or after doing a little sightseeing. The park features a beautiful sandy beach, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and building sandcastles. I personally loved the Adirondack chairs which are placed all over the park. I found one right on the beach and spent some time reading while listening to the calming sounds of the water.
Shepard Park also offers picnic areas, walking trails, and stunning views of the lake and mountains. There are public bathrooms here as well.
Visit Fort William Henry
Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of the French and Indian War at Fort William Henry. This meticulously recreated fort offers visitors a glimpse into life in the 18th century. Take your time exploring the historic grounds and learn about the fort’s pivotal role in shaping American history.
One of the most captivating aspects of Fort William Henry is its commitment to historical accuracy. There are costumed interpreters who bring the past to life through engaging storytelling, live demonstrations, and interactive experiences. My personal favorite part was getting to watch a demonstration of a canon firing. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for a fun and educational outing, a visit to Fort William Henry is definitely one of those things to do in Lake George that you won’t want to miss.
Go Shopping in Bolton Landing
Bolton Landing is beyond charming! Just a 10-mile drive from the town of Lake George, Bolton Landing is close enough to explore without having to go too far. And had I known how adorable it was, I would have happily spent more time here. This picturesque town also offers a variety of unique shops, boutiques, and art galleries, perfect for finding one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts.
From trendy clothing stores to antique shops and gourmet food markets, you’ll find something to suit every taste. Whether you’re searching for a special keepsake or simply looking to window shop, Bolton Landing is a great place to spend an afternoon.
Have Dinner at The Gem
For a truly unforgettable dining experience, make a reservation at The Gem. Also located in Bolton Landing, this is the perfect place to go after your retail therapy. The Gem is cozy and welcoming with a thoughtfully curated cocktail list and a mouthwatering menu.
They specialize in BBQ and if you’re in the mood to indulge, I’m telling you, this is the place to do it! You can choose from a variety of delicious smoked meats, and tasty sides. I tried their sausage, ½ chicken, and pulled pork with tater tots and baked beans. Every bite was phenomenal! I also highly recommend saving room for dessert as their sticky pudding was the perfect way to end an impeccable meal.
