Cattaraugus County, New York: The Ultimate Winter Weekend Itinerary

Cattaraugus County is one of Western New York’s most underrated destinations. And it absolutely transforms into a winter wonderland when the snow starts to fall. While many people know it as home to Holiday Valley and some of the best skiing in the state, there’s so much more to discover beyond the slopes.

I’ve been visiting this area since I was a child, but I never ventured much past the town of Ellicottville. My most recent trip completely opened my eyes to everything else Cattaraugus County has to offer. From rich cultural experiences and hidden gems to incredible food, I discovered that even if you’re not into winter sports, this region has something special for every kind of traveler. If you’ve been thinking about a winter getaway to Cattaraugus County, here’s your perfect three-day itinerary!

Day 1: Afternoon in Ellicottville

Kick things off in Ellicottville, New York, a charming mountain town that looks like a picture-perfect postcard, especially during winter. With its beautiful architecture, twinkling lights, and snow-lined streets, this walkable village has a cozy, almost storybook feel.

Lunch at Katy’s Cafรฉ

Start your weekend with lunch at Katy’s Cafรฉ, a beloved local spot serving up comfort food and warm hospitality. The menu features hearty sandwiches, fresh salads, and daily specials that hit the spot after a chilly morning. It’s the kind of place where locals gather, the atmosphere is relaxed, and you instantly feel welcome.

Boutique Shopping & Wandering

After lunch, take your time wandering through Ellicottville’s adorable boutique shops that line Washington Street. From unique home dรฉcor and artisan gifts to cozy apparel perfect for a winter getaway, thereโ€™s a little something for everyone. Be sure to take notice of the Ellicottville Historical Museum and the iconic Christmas tree made out of skis. It makes for the perfect photo op! With so many cute shops and cafes to explore, it’s easy to lose track of time while soaking up the small-town charm.

Where To Stay: Inn at Holiday Valley

Make your home base the Inn at Holiday Valley, the perfect accommodation and location for your time in Cattaraugus County. While Holiday Valley offers year-round activities, there’s something undeniably special about experiencing it during the winter months when the entire resort comes to life!

For Winter Sports Enthusiasts

Holiday Valley boasts over 60 slopes and trails, a terrain park, and night skiing, making it one of the premier ski destinations in the Northeast. But it’s not just downhill skiing that draws visitors. I decided to step outside my comfort zone and try cross-country skiing for the first time during my stay, and let’s just say… it’s a bit harder than it looks! The peaceful, scenic trails are gorgeous, but don’t underestimate the workout. (My legs reminded me of that the next day.)

The Inn Experience

The Inn itself is everything you want in a winter retreat. Itโ€™s cozy, comfortable, and incredibly convenient. I loved that the slopes were literally right outside my balcony door. And for those of you visiting specifically for the winter sports- no shuttles, no long walks in the cold- just pure ski-in, ski-out convenience. After a day on the mountain, there’s nothing better than retreating to your room, warming up by the fire in the lodge, or even enjoying their heated outdoor pools.

Dinner at West Rose

After getting settled in at the Inn, head into Ellicottville for dinner at West Rose. This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in the area, and I couldnโ€™t recommend it more. The atmosphere is equal parts cozy and chic. Dim lighting, intimate seating, and a warm ambiance make it the perfect spot.

But the real star here? The food and cocktails! West Rose’s menu is thoughtfully crafted with creative takes on elevated comfort food, and the cocktail list is just as impressive. Youโ€™ll find balanced, inventive, and perfectly executed drinks.

Now, I have to talk about the burger. I’d heard rave reviews about it long before my visit, and I’m here to tell you: it absolutely lives up to the hype. This is the kind of burger you’re still thinking about days later. Pair it with one of their craft cocktails, and you’ve got yourself the ideal winter evening.

Day 2: Adventure Beyond the Slopes

Day two is all about stepping beyond the ski slopes and diving into the heart of what makes Cattaraugus County so special. From Amish craftsmanship to rich cultural history and incredible local flavors, today’s itinerary is packed with unforgettable experiences.

Breakfast at Ellicottville Bake Shop

Start your second day with breakfast at Ellicottville Bake Shop, a local gem with exceptional baked goods and hearty breakfast options. It’s clear where they get their name. The bakery case is filled with an irresistible array of sweet treats, but don’t let the pastries distract you from their savory offerings.

The breakfast sandwiches here are exceptional. I went with a traditional bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel, and it was perfection. Grab your breakfast to go or settle in at one of their cozy tables with a hot coffee. Either way, you’re setting yourself up for a great day ahead!

Exploring the Amish Trail

From there, venture out to explore the Amish Trail, one of Cattaraugus County’s most unique and authentic experiences. This region is home to just under 200 Amish-owned shops, offering everything from handcrafted furniture and toys to farm-fresh cheese and baked goods. It’s a wonderful way to step back in time, support local artisans, and discover the incredible craftsmanship that defines this community. Here are a few places I highly recommend checking out on the trail.

Hilltop Toy Shop

A visit to Hilltop Toy Shop feels like walking straight into Santa’s workshop. The shelves are lined with beautifully handcrafted wooden toys, like rocking horses, trains, and unique games. Each piece is a work of art that showcases exceptional woodworking skills! Whether you’re shopping for a child in your life or simply admiring the craftsmanship, this stop is pure magic.

Malinda’s Candy Shop

And don’t even think about leaving the Amish Trail without stopping at Malinda’s for something sweet. They are known specifically for their chocolate, and the options seem endless! If you have a sweet tooth, this place is definitely for you.

Valley View Cheese Shop

Next, make your way to Valley View Cheese Shop, where you’ll find an impressive selection of farm-fresh cheese, dry goods, bulk snacks, and even handmade furniture. The cheese selection alone is worth the trip! Stock up on stuff for a cozy night in or grab some treats to bring home as gifts.

A Respectful Reminder

As you explore, please remember to respect the Amish community’s beliefs. Photography of people along the trail is not permitted, as it goes against their religious practices. You’re welcome to photograph the beautiful landscapes and shops, but always be mindful and courteous of the people who call this place home.

Salamanca Antique Mall

If antiques are your thing, you cannot miss the Salamanca Antique Mall. Itโ€™s the largest antique mall in all of New York State, and trust me, they’ve earned that title.

Spread across a massive space, this treasure trove is packed with literally everything you could imagine: vintage collectibles, original paintings, antique jewelry, mid-century furniture, retro signage, rare books, glassware, and so much more. Whether you’re a serious collector hunting for that one perfect piece or just someone who loves the thrill of discovering hidden gems, this place will captivate you.

Here’s my advice: give yourself plenty of time. It’s HUGE, and it’s easy to lose track of time. Each vendor brings their own unique finds, so no two sections feel the same.

Seneca-Iroquois National Museum

Afterward, make your way to the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum in Salamanca, a visit that will undoubtedly be one of the most meaningful parts of your weekend.

I had the opportunity to take a guided tour here, and it was truly eye-opening. Walking through the exhibits with a knowledgeable guide who shared stories of the Seneca Nation’s history, culture, and traditions brought everything to life in a way that self-guided exploration simply couldn’t match. From the Creation Story and clan systems to intricate beadwork, pottery, and artifacts, every exhibit tells a story of resilience, creativity, and deep-rooted traditions that have been passed down for generations.

But this museum is more than just a celebration of culture. It’s also an honest look at the injustices the Seneca people have faced and continue to face today. Learning about the impact of broken treaties, forced relocations, and the construction of the Kinzua Dam was sobering and necessary. It’s a reminder that this history isn’t just part of the past. It’s ongoing, and it deserves our attention and respect.

If you can, I highly recommend booking a guided tour (call ahead at 716-945-1760 to schedule). The personal insights and context make the experience so much richer.

Dinner at Villaggio

Head back to Ellicottville for dinner at Villaggio, a super cozy, rustic Italian restaurant that feels like a warm hug at the end of a full day. Itโ€™s the kind of place where you can settle in, relax, and enjoy a truly satisfying meal.

Villaggio serves up classic Italian fare done right. They have everything from hearty pasta dishes to fresh salads and perfectly prepared entrees. I ordered the chicken parm, and let me tell you, it was next level. I’m not ashamed to admit I ate every single bite.

Day 3: A Sweet Send-Off

Your final morning in Cattaraugus County is all about savoring the last moments before heading home. Start with a sweet breakfast and end with a visit to one of the region’s most breathtaking landmarks.

Breakfast at Sprague’s Maple Farm

Kick off your final day with breakfast at Sprague’s Maple Farm, a family-owned gem that’s been producing pure maple syrup and serving up delicious homestyle breakfasts for generations. Located in the rolling hills of Cattaraugus County, this charming spot feels authentically local.

What Makes It Special

Sprague’s serves breakfast all day, which means no matter when you roll in, you’re covered. And here’s my advice: get something that involves maple syrup. I mean, you’re at a working syrup farm- it would be a crime not to. The maple syrup here isn’t just a topping; it’s the star of the show, and it’s some of the best you’ll ever taste.

I went with the stuffed French toast, and it was an absolute winner. Thick slices of bread stuffed with a sweet cream cheese filling, griddled to golden perfection. It’s indulgent, comforting, and exactly what you want on the last morning of a winter getaway!

The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels

End your time in Cattaraugus County with a visit to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in Olean. A stunning architectural masterpiece that’s truly worth experiencing, regardless of your religious background.

A Work of Art

The moment you step inside this Neo-Gothic Roman Catholic basilica, you’re struck by the sheer beauty and grandeur of the space. Soaring twin steeples, breathtaking stained glass windows crafted in the Munich style, intricate Carrara marble altars, and ornate Gothic Revival details at every turn make this basilica feel more like a museum than a place of worship. The craftsmanship is extraordinary, and it’s impossible not to be moved by the artistry and dedication that went into creating such a magnificent structure.

Tours are offered every Friday (except the first Friday of the month) at 1:15 pm.
