Nestled in the heart of Upstate New York lies a natural oasis far removed from the typical big city vibes- the Finger Lakes. If you’re completely unfamiliar with this region, its name comes from the series of long, narrow lakes that resemble the fingers of a hand. It’s a haven for nature lovers, wine enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a picturesque escape. From the beautiful scenery, incredible state parks, amazing wineries, and adorable towns, the Finger Lakes has a little something for everyone.
Growing up in Buffalo, NY, the Finger Lakes has always been a convenient yet exciting getaway destination. Because of its location, it’s very easy to reach from Western and Upstate New York. I’ve visited on numerous occasions and there’s always something new that draws me back. And with eleven lakes making up the Finger Lakes, I imagine I’ll be drawn back many more times!
However, for the sake of this article I’m going to discuss a few of the most popular lakes- ones that you’d most likely be visiting if traveling to the Finger Lakes for the first or second time. In this article I will outline some of the very best that these lakes have to offer. I will give suggestions on where to stay, state parks to visit, incredible places to eat, and more!
Canandaigua Lake: The Clearst of the Finger Lakes
Canandaigua Lake is recognized as the cleanest and clearest of the Finger Lakes. It formed around 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, giving it deep glacial origins and exceptional water clarity. For this reason, water enthusiasts in particular will flock to Canandaigua Lake. From fishing to kayaking, sailing and swimming, you can only imagine how vibrant this lake is during the summer months.
Where to Stay

The suites are extremely spacious, yet cozy, with a very welcoming feel. You also can’t beat a balcony view overlooking the lake. Interested in staying at Hotel Canandaigua? Book here!

Head over to the City Pier to take in some scenic views and maybe stumble onto some live music. There’s also a handful of local art galleries and antique shops to enjoy.

Seneca Lake: The Deepest of the Finger Lakes
Seneca Lake is the largest and deepest of the Finger Lakes. Some of its claims to fame include not only its remarkable depth of 618 ft, but it’s also the lake trout capital of the world! If fishing is your thing chances are you’ll have great luck at Seneca Lake. Due to the combination of the lake’s microclimate and fertile soil, this area is also filled with wineries and vineyards, making it a haven for wine enthusiasts. Last but not least, Seneca Lake is home to one of the most magical New York State parks that exists- in my opinion at least.
Where to Stay
Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel- This gorgeous waterfront hotel isn’t just situated right on the lake with exceptional views and surroundings, but it is also right on the doorstep of Watkins Glen State Park- that very magical place I just mentioned a moment ago. To be exact, it’s less than a five minute drive away, making for a very convenient location. The hotel itself has an indoor pool, a fitness center, large, comfortable rooms, and excellently rated amenities. Interested in staying at Watkins Glen Harbor? Book here!
What to Do
Watkins Glen State Park- This state park is the crown jewel of Seneca Lake. Visiting Watkins Glen honestly feels like stepping into a fairytale. Picture this: a seemingly endless river that flows through towering cliffs, lush greenery, serene rock bridges, that showcases numerous waterfalls. It’s truly a sight to behold. The most popular trail at Watkins Glen is the Gorge Trail. Roughly 1.5 miles, you’ll get the best views of Glen Creek, the gorge, its cliffs, and the 19 beautiful waterfalls within the park.
Visit the Wine Trail- Seneca Lake has one of the largest and most established wine trails in the Finger Lakes. It’s also one of the oldest wine trails in the United states, having roots dating back to the 1980s. If you like to sip wine while taking in beautiful scenery and not to mention the diverse selection of wines you’ll have to choose from, then this activity is for you. Some of best rated wineries to visit on the Seneca Wine Trail are:

You’ll find everything on their menu from steaks and fish to dishes revolving around local produce. And don’t forget the regional wines! They’re known for their fantastic, quick service and memorable meals.
Cayuga Lake: The Longest of the Finger Lakes
Cayuga Lake is my personal favorite of the Finger Lakes I’ve visited so far. So much so, that I’ve actually been twice. My first trip was towards the end of winter and my second, during mid-summer. Both seasons were unbelievably beautiful times to experience this picturesque place. Cayuga Lake is the longest of the Finger Lakes, stretching approximately 38 miles long. It’s known for its deep blue waters, beautiful rolling hills, the vineyards of course, and the numerous waterfalls you’ll encounter here.
Where to Stay
Inn at Taughannock- Inn at Taughannock offers a delightful escape into nature’s beauty. This incredible property was originally purchased in 1873 by a wealthy couple from Philadelphia. They bought it as a private home for enjoying summers on the lake. The Inn has undeniable charm, a cozy atmosphere, and the most incredible views of Cayuga Lake. The rooms offer modern amenities without losing its quaintness and the grounds are truly spectacular. It’s also America’s only lake view inn just steps from a natural waterfall wonder! What to Do
Taughannock Falls State Park- There’s numerous state parks in this area, which I will be covering, but Taughannock Falls State Park deserves its own separate mention. Taughannock Falls has a drop of 215 feet. It’s one of the highest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains. And it’s easily one of the most impressive in the Finger Lakes. I promise you, this state park is not to be missed!
Chase Waterfalls Around Ithaca- As the saying goes “Ithaca is gorges” and it couldn’t be more true. The city of Ithaca itself is super charming. There’s tons of great restaurants and cute shops, but if you’re more so visting for the nature aspect, you’ll be pleased to know that Ithaca has more than 150 waterfalls! - Six Mile Creek Falls- a peaceful area along six Mile Creek, offering a great escape into nature
Get a Massage at August Moon Spa- After a day of hiking trails and waterfall chasing, take a relaxing break at August Moon Spa. This tranquil facility offers various massages, facials, and waxing treatments. They use local ingredients to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience. You will leave here feeling replenished and rejuvenated.
Where to Eat
Finger Lakes Cider House- Located a little off the beaten path, this tasting room offers up numerous hard ciders (I recommend doing a flight) cheese plates and charcuterie boards. Their menu also has a handful of sandwiches and I promise you, it’s all fantastic. The atmosphere is super chill, the staff is very friendly, and their outdoor seating options offer some beautiful views. They also have an adorable little shop worth checking out before you head off.
Boatyard Grill- This fantastic spot is located right on the water and has all of the vibes of an upscale lakeside restaurant. Featuring either big cozy booths, or the inviting bar, it’s a fun place to eat and drink. The menu is seafood heavy with little touches of Asian fusion. Everything from the cocktails to the appetizers to the main courses will leave you impressed.
Mercato Bar & Kitchen– This lovely, little Italian eatery is located in downtown Ithaca and it’s the definition of cozy aesthetic. You can tell that a lot of thought and love goes into each and every dish, especially when it comes to their pastas. The wine list is fairly extensive and you’ll want to save room for dessert!
