Admire Macy’s Window Displays
One of the most iconic free things to do in NYC during the holiday season is to marvel at the stunning window displays at Macy’s Herald Square. Each year, Macy’s unveils a new theme, bringing beloved characters and whimsical scenes to life. As you stroll along 34th Street, be sure to pause and admire the intricate details and dazzling lights that adorn these magical displays. It’s an enchanting experience for all ages!
Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, it’s also worth walking through the store to check out some of the other beautiful holiday decorations inside. As this is their flagship store, it’s gigantic and widely impressive. With eleven, yes eleven floors! There truly is so much to see. If you’d like to avoid some of the crowds that flock here during this time of year, it’s best to arrive early in the morning or later in the evening.

Grand Central Terminal is a stunning architectural masterpiece that transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. Stroll through the terminal’s grand halls, admire the beautiful celestial ceiling and marvel at the stunning Beaux-Arts architecture!
While you’re there, be sure to check out the Grand Central Holiday Fair, a beloved six-week-long celebration of small businesses. This popular holiday market features unique gifts, handcrafted items, and delicious treats! It also makes for a perfect opportunity to find one-of-a-kind gifts for your loved ones or even souvenirs for yourself to commemorate your New York trip.

View the Iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree
No trip to New York City during the holiday season is complete without visiting Rockefeller Center to admire the world-famous Christmas tree. This towering spruce, adorned with thousands of sparkling lights, is a beloved holiday tradition. The first formal tree-lighting ceremony actually took place in 1933! As you gaze upon this magnificent sight, it’s impossible not to be filled with holiday cheer.
While the tree itself is a free attraction, there are also plenty of other free things to do around Rockefeller Center. You can window shop at the nearby stores, check out other Christmas displays, or simply enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Explore the Bryant Park Winter Village
My personal favorite on this list of free things to do in NYC is visiting the Bryant Park Winter Village. During the holiday season, Bryant Park transforms into a winter wonderland and its holiday market was actually voted the second best in the WHOLE WORLD! How cool is that?! And while it is free to enter, I would expect to spend some money here. There are over 170 artisan vendors selling art, jewelry, clothing, kids toys, and so much more. I suggest going there hungry, as you can also expect a bunch of incredible food and drink options as well.
You can also skate for free at the Byrant Park Winter Village as long as you bring your own skates. They do offer rentals if you don’t have your own, but you will have to pay for them.

As you stroll through Midtown, keep an eye out for these festive decorations. They’re a fun photo op and a great way to get into the holiday spirit. This is one of the many free things to do in NYC that will make your holiday season truly memorable!

One of my personal favorite holiday displays in New York City can be found at the Lotte New York Palace. Every year, this stunning, historic hotel unveils a magnificent Christmas tree in its grand courtyard. Adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and elegant ornaments, the tree is a true spectacle to behold.
Taking a moment to admire this breathtaking tree is one of the many free things to do in NYC during the holiday season. It is also free to enter the hotel’s lobby, where you can enjoy the festive atmosphere, which is often decorated beautifully for the holidays.

Walk The High Line
If you’re unfamiliar, the High Line is an elevated linear park built on a former New York Central Railroad freight line. It offers a unique perspective of the city below while allowing you to enjoy some tranquility. Let me just say, walking the High Line feels MUCH different than walking the streets of NYC. And as you stroll along this elevated walkway, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the city skyline, lush greenery, and very cool public art installations.
During the holiday season, the High Line is transformed into a winter wonderland, with festive decorations and twinkling lights. It’s a great place to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful moment in the city. Watch The Sunset at Little Island
Little Island, a stunning new park on the Hudson River, is the perfect spot to catch a breathtaking sunset. While most epic sunset views in the Big Apple cost Big bucks, visiting Little Island for sunset is just another one of those incredible free things to do in NYC.
This unique, tulip-shaped park offers beautiful views of the skyline and the river. As the sun begins to set, the sky is painted with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. Grab a blanket, find a cozy spot on one of the park’s many lawns, and enjoy the serene escape from the hustle and bustle. It’s the perfect way to end the day in New York City.
