After fueling up, make your way to South Hill Cider, one of the Finger Lakes’ most beloved cideries. Just a short drive from downtown Ithaca, South Hill offers a peaceful, scenic escape with sweeping views of the Cayuga Lake Valley and surrounding orchards.

This charming cidery is known for its small-batch, estate-grown ciders crafted with care and intention. You can enjoy a glass on the patio, sample a curated tasting flight, or take part in a guided tasting experience. They offer multiple tasting options depending on your preferences, and the staff is always happy to share more about the apple varieties and cider-making process.

Stop 3: Chase Waterfalls at Buttermilk Falls State Park

Right down the road from South Hill Cider is the beautiful Buttermilk Falls State Park. The park’s namesake is a stunning 165-foot cascading waterfall that greets visitors near the lower entrance, easily accessible from the parking area.

For those eager to explore further, the Gorge Trail offers a moderately challenging hike. This 0.75-mile trail ascends approximately 450 feet, featuring numerous stone staircases and leading hikers past a series of waterfalls. The Rim Trail, on the opposite side of the gorge, allows for a scenic 1.5-mile loop that showcases the park’s diverse landscapes.

Stop 4: Explore The Commons

After immersing yourself in Ithaca’s natural beauty, head downtown to experience the vibrant energy of The Commons, a four-block pedestrian mall brimming with local charm. This bustling area is home to over 100 independently owned shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, making it a perfect spot for leisurely exploration.

For example, you can browse the shelves at the beloved Buffalo Street Books, hunt for vintage treasures at Pastimes Antiques, or discover handcrafted goods at Fibers. Music lovers can stop by Ithaca Guitar Works, and The Cat’s Pajamas is a fun spot for quirky gifts and toys. For a bite to eat, enjoy a cozy meal at Café Dewitt or try the iconic Moosewood Restaurant, known for its pioneering vegetarian cuisine.

Stop 5: Check In at William Henry Miller Inn

By this time, you should be able to check into your accommodation for the night. For a charming and convenient stay, I highly recommend the William Henry Miller Inn. You can expect hearty sandwiches, vibrant salads, and satisfying breakfast items like burritos and bowls. The market also offers a selection of local products. From fresh produce to artisanal goods, it’s a great spot to pick up some unique items to take home.

Stop 7: Visit Black Diamond Farm & Cider

Just a short drive from Main Street Market, Black Diamond Farm & Cider in Trumansburg is a must-visit for cider enthusiasts. This family-owned orchard boasts over 100 varieties of apples and pears! Many of which are rare heirlooms and European cultivars selected specifically for their cider-making qualities.

Open seasonally from May through November, Wednesday to Sunday, 1 PM to 5 PM, the tasting room provides an opportunity to sample a range of orchard-based ciders crafted entirely from fruit grown on the farm.

Stop 8: Marvel at Ithaca Falls

As you return to downtown Ithaca, make a brief stop at Ithaca Falls. This is one of the city’s most impressive natural landmarks! Standing at 150 feet tall and 175 feet wide, this powerful waterfall is located on Fall Creek and is easily accessible. No strenuous hike is required, making it an ideal quick visit for all travelers. The falls are situated within a natural amphitheater formed by the erosion of shale gorge walls, offering a dramatic and picturesque setting. There’s a reason why the saying is “Ithaca is gorges!”

Stop 9: Dinner at The Rook

Cap off your day with dinner at The Rook, a beloved Ithaca eatery now located at 105 W. Court Street, at the corner of Court and Cayuga Streets. After eight years on West State Street, The Rook has found a new home in the Library Place building.
