Where is Rochester, New York?

Rochester is located in Western New York, positioned along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. It’s about an hour east of Buffalo, 2.5 hours west of Syracuse, and just a few hours from the Finger Lakes region and even Toronto, Canada. This makes Rochester an ideal stop on any Upstate New York or Northeast road trip.

If you’re flying in, you’ll arrive at Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC), which is conveniently located just a short drive from downtown. Whether you’re coming by car or plane, Rochester is easy to reach and perfectly situated for a quick getaway or an extended adventure exploring New York State.

Best Time of Year for Visiting Rochester

Rochester is truly a year-round destination, with each season offering its own unique charm. While I personally recommend visiting in late spring to early summer or during the fall months, you’ll find something special no matter when you go.

Spring: The city comes to life! You’ll find beautiful blooms and festivals like the famous Lilac Festival in May, one of the largest of its kind in North America

Summer: Perfect for enjoying Rochester’s many outdoor attractions. Spend time along the Genesee River, explore the parks, and experience fun events like the Rochester Jazz Festival in June

Fall: Rochester’s vibrant foliage transforms the city and surrounding areas into a colorful wonderland. It’s also the ideal season for apple picking, visiting local farms, and exploring the nearby Finger Lakes wine region

Winter: The city becomes cozy and festive, with charming coffee shops, ice skating, and holiday events that create a magical atmosphere. Just be prepared for chilly temperatures and plenty of snow!

Where to Stay When Visiting Rochester

Rochester offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every type of traveler and budget. I personally stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites and had a wonderful experience. I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for a solid place to stay!  It’s conveniently located near many of the city’s top attractions, and the hotel itself features a beautiful restaurant and bar. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It was overall the perfect home base for visiting Rochester.

How To Spend Your Time in Rochester

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get into the fun stuff. Here’s a perfect two-day itinerary of how to spend your time while visiting Rochester.

Day 1 in Rochester

Stop 1: Grab a Coffee at Winter Swan

Kick off your morning at Winter Swan. This is a one-of-a-kind gem that blends a coffee bar, flower boutique, and gift shop all under one beautifully curated roof. Nestled inside Stacy K Floral, this atmospheric spot greets you with blooms and greenery the moment you step through the door.

As a non-coffee drinker, I absolutely loved their Butterfly Pea Latte. It’s a dreamy blue-hued creation that’s as delightful to look at as it is to sip. While you enjoy your drink, browse through their lush plants, freshly arranged bouquets, and elegant home goods, designed to feel less like your typical café and more like a peaceful retreat. From candles and cute cards to fantastic home décor,  Winter Swan truly has it all.

Stop 2: Play at the Strong Museum

No trip to Rochester is complete without a visit to The Strong National Museum of Play. It’s one of the most unique and interactive museums in the country. This vibrant space is part museum, part indoor amusement park, and fully dedicated to the power of play. From larger-than-life exhibits and classic arcade games to the National Toy Hall of Fame and an indoor butterfly garden, there’s something here for everyone, whether you’re traveling with kids or just feeling nostalgic.

You can easily spend a full day exploring everything here. From a mini Wegmans grocery store and Sesame Street sets to the Sky Line ropes course and seasonal Hasbro Game Park. There’s also on-site dining, easy parking, and plenty of spots to take a break between adventures. If you have the time, a two-day ticket is worth it.

Stop 3: Have Lunch at Strangebird

From there, head to Strangebird Brewery & Eatery for lunch. Nestled just a short walk from downtown, Strangebird has been named one of the best breweries in the US! They offer a sleek yet laid-back vibe perfect for a midday break. And with 24 rotating taps, there’s a little something for everyone.

Head to the back of the restaurant to order your food and then choose between a table or a seat at the stylish bar. Their food is scratch‑made, locally sourced, and thoughtfully curated to complement their beers. And let me tell you, it’s incredible! They have so many amazing options, but their pizzas are honestly one of the best I’ve ever had.

Stop 4: Check Into Your Hotel

By this time, you should be able to check into your hotel. As I mentioned before, I highly suggest staying at the Hampton Inn. It’s located right across the street from the Strong Museum, with many other things within walking distance. It’s the perfect place for a comfortable, cozy, and convenient stay. If you’d like to book the Hampton Inn, click here.

Stop 5: Take an Erie Canal Cruise

After getting settled in, take a short 15-minute drive to Pittsford to experience the Sam Patch Erie Canal Cruise. This 90-minute boat tour, operated by the nonprofit Corn Hill Navigation, takes place on a replica 19th-century packet boat and includes a ride through Lock 32—a working lock that showcases the engineering marvel of the Erie Canal. Throughout the journey, you’ll enjoy live narration filled with historical insight, scenic views, and the option to purchase snacks, beer, or wine onboard.

Beyond being a relaxing excursion, the Sam Patch cruise also supports a good cause. Proceeds go toward educational programs and conservation efforts that connect the community to the canal’s rich heritage, especially meaningful as the Erie Canal approaches its 200th anniversary in 2025, which is such an exciting time to visit!

Stop 6: Sip Wine at Living Roots

From there, head to Living Roots, a cozy, stylish tasting room where modern wine culture meets local tradition.  Founded by Sebastian Hardy, a sixth-generation winemaker from South Australia, and his Rochester-born wife Colleen, the winery blends Finger Lakes whites and sparklings with vibrant South Australian reds, sourced from both families’ vineyards.

Pop in for a relaxed, sit‑down tasting, order a flight at the bar, or hang out on the patio. The staff is super knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. I personally recommend trying one of their flights, as it’s a great way to sample a few different wines that they offer, all of which are amazing!

Stop 7: Dinner at Vern’s

For dinner, you absolutely can’t go wrong with Vern’s. Nestled at 696 Park Avenue, this modern American‑Italian restaurant delivers a sleek yet cozy vibe—think Brooklyn or Manhattan energy right in the heart of Rochester. They don’t take reservations, so walk-ins are very welcome. Indoor, outdoor, or bar seating is all offered, so you can soak up the ambiance however you like.

The menu at Vern’s is just as inviting as the atmosphere. They’re celebrated for pasta like the Lost Meatball Ragu, where rich ragu replaces traditional meatballs atop shellbow pasta and fresh ricotta. But the pizzas might steal the spotlight—don’t miss the Bee Sting (spicy honey meets cupperoni). I personally went with their special of the evening, which was incredible! I also highly recommend saving room for dessert. This is the perfect way to close your first day visiting Rochester!

Day 2 in Rochester

Stop 1: Breakfast at Highland Park Diner

Start day two in Rochester with breakfast at Highland Park Diner, an iconic mid‑century “boxcar” diner tucked into the vibrant Swillburg neighborhood. It was built by the Orleans Diner Company in the late 1940s and is one of the only surviving examples of its kind. Its retro exterior and cozy booths bring instant nostalgia!

Inside, you’ll find all the classic diner dishes done exceptionally well. Choose from a wide array of omelets, fluffy pancakes, and waffles that locals rave about. You also can’t go wrong with one of their old‑fashioned hand‑made milkshakes.

Stop 2: Tour the Eastman Museum

Begin your Rochester morning with a visit to the George Eastman Museum, the world’s oldest museum dedicated to photography. The museum’s massive collections span over 400,000 photographs, more than 28,000 film titles, and extensive photographic technology, making it essential for history buffs, film lovers, and camera enthusiasts alike.

During your visit, you’ll get to explore several compelling exhibitions as well as Eastman’s immaculately restored mansion and gardens, which have been brought back to his original plans using historical records. Enjoy guided or self-guided tours of the gardens as well, which bloom with the same seasonal layouts from a century ago! This is definitely one of those places you will not want to miss while visiting Rochester.

Stop 3: Make A Candle at Scents by Design

From there, head to Scents by Design, Rochester’s only pour-your-own candle and custom fragrance bar. You’ll be welcomed by a wall of over 100 premium scents, all crafted with natural soy wax, 100% cotton wicks, and high-quality fragrance oils designed to burn clean and true. Start by sampling the many scents and jotting down your favorites—there’s something for everyone, from fresh and floral to warm and woodsy. Once you’ve narrowed it down, choose a stylish candle vessel and take a seat at the bar, where you can sip on a glass of wine or champagne while working with a Scent Stylist to blend your custom fragrance and pour your candle.

Whether you’re visiting solo, planning a date, or looking for a creative group activity, this hands-on experience is a memorable way to take home a custom souvenir from Rochester.

Stop 4: Lunch at Genesee Brew House

While you give your candle some time to set, head to the Genesee Brew House—a historic and delicious stop for lunch! Set inside a former packaging center dating back to more than a century, the Brew House now offers interactive exhibits on the brewing process, a well-stocked gift shop filled with Genesee memorabilia, and a cozy pilot brewery bar where you can enjoy local brews and see small-batch production firsthand. It’s a wonderfully immersive way to learn about one of New York’s oldest breweries, founded in 1878.

Upstairs, you’ll find the restaurant offering pub-style fare like classic Bavarian pretzels, burgers, wings, and sandwiches, all paired with Genesee’s signature beers or locally rotated guest drafts on tap. And once you’re done with lunch, you must head up to the rooftop terrace for stunning views of the Genesee River and the iconic High Falls!

Stop 5: Tour the Susan B. Anthony Museum

Your next stop after lunch is the Susan B. Anthony Museum, the lifelong home and headquarters of the famed suffragist and civil rights champion. Docent-led tours are offered Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and while walk-ins are welcome, reservations are recommended. Expect your experience to last about 45 minutes to an hour, during which you’ll step into the very parlor where she was arrested for voting in 1872, admire original furniture and personal artifacts like her iconic black silk dress, and learn how this home played a pivotal role in organizing and advancing the women’s suffrage movement.

Beyond the historic threshold, the museum’s thoughtful exhibits bring Anthony’s legacy to life with immersive storytelling and context. You’ll explore how she intersected with abolitionism, temperance, and suffrage advocacy right from the heart of Rochester, connecting those 19th-century battles to today’s ongoing social justice efforts.

Stop 6: Create Custom Jewelry at Figgy Studio

After your fascinating history lesson, make your way to Figgy Studio & Shop, a boutique gem in Rochester’s Park Avenue district. Here you’ll find an incredible selection of clothing, home decor, and gifts from over 60 regional artists. Figgy also specializes in small-batch, high-quality jewelry crafted right on-site in their studio. The real magic happens at the Design Bar, where you can walk in anytime to build a truly unique piece of jewelry.

Choose from a wide range of natural gemstones, select your preferred style—be it a ring, bracelet, necklace, or earrings—and collaborate with an expert to bring your vision to life. You can book a one-on-one design appointment or even host a Design Party with friends for a fun and personalized experience. It’s the perfect way to craft something beautiful that you’ll carry with you long after your Rochester adventure!

Stop 7: Dinner at Branca Midtown

End your evening with dinner at Branca Midtown. This modern Italian restaurant is described as a “love letter to Italy,” blending Old World tradition with a fresh, contemporary twist. The atmosphere is inviting and warm, perfect for a cozy date night or a solo drink at the bar.

The menu showcases handcrafted pasta and pizza made in‑house daily, alongside elevated entrees and signature cocktails, all built around high-quality, seasonal ingredients. I personally went with one of their pastas, and it was truly exceptional! It was honestly the perfect way to end my 48 hours of exploring Rochester.
