If you’re planning a summer trip to New York—or live here and are craving a weekend getaway—the Finger Lakes should be at the top of your list. This region has it all: world-class wineries, charming small towns, impressive museums, and some of the most breathtaking state parks in the Northeast. With so much to see and do, it offers something for every kind of traveler. While the area is vast and could easily fill weeks of exploration, here’s how I’d recommend spending a perfect 48 hours in the Finger Lakes. And I can promise you, you’ll be itching to come back and see more!
What Are The Finger Lakes Exactly?
The Finger Lakes are a group of eleven long, narrow lakes located in central and western New York State. They’re named for their distinctive finger-like shape when viewed on a map. Formed by glacial activity over two million years ago, the region is now known for its natural beauty and, most importantly, its award-winning wine country!
The most popular lakes for visitors include Seneca, Cayuga, Keuka, and Canandaigua. Each offers its own unique mix of attractions, from vineyards and breweries to hiking trails and historic sites.

Day 1: Seneca Lake & Watkins Glen
Stop 1: Lunch at Ginny Lee Cafe
Once you arrive in the Finger Lakes, kick off your getaway at Ginny Lee Café. Nestled right on the shores of Seneca Lake at Wagner Vineyards, it’s a perfect first stop. Open daily for lunch between 11 AM and 4 PM during the summer and early fall, this lakeside gem offers both indoor seating and a sunny deck with sweeping water views. Their menu features fresh, seasonal fare, like artisan sandwiches, delicious wraps, and great appetizers. You can also expect fantastic wine or beer pairings from Wagner Vineyards, located right next door.

Stop 2: Wine Tasting at Wagner Vineyards
If you passed on wine at lunch—or just want a deeper dive—Wagner Vineyards is the perfect next stop. Founded in 1979 by Bill Wagner, it was the very first winery on the east side of Seneca Lake! And it’s now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wagner family. You’ll find over 30 award-winning wines. From crisp Rieslings and lively Chardonnays to robust Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and even ice wines.

Choose between a casual self-guided flight on the spacious Vantage Point deck overlooking the lake (no reservation needed) or opt for a more intimate guided tasting, which pairs rare vintages with hands-on insights from the staff.
Outside, you’ll find picnic tables, dog‑friendly grounds, and of course, sweeping views while sipping your flight. Between the educational tastings, historic setting, and lake breeze, Wagner is an absolute must-visit!
Stop 3: More Wine Tasting at Lakewood Vineyards
When you’re in Finger Lakes Wine Country, you can’t visit only one vineyard! Your next must-visit stop is Lakewood Vineyards, beautifully perched on the west side of Seneca Lake. Today, they cultivate about 100 acres and grow 15 different grape varieties, producing award-winning wines that range from crisp Rieslings and Gewürztraminer to Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and even a sparkling blanc-de-noir.

You can enjoy a classic tasting flight in their scenic tasting room, join a guided tour for a behind-the-scenes look, or even take a vineyard hike that ends with a tasting among the vines. Outside, their deck offers gorgeous lake views and a louvered roof for the perfect mix of sun and shade.

Downtown is filled with charming bars, inviting restaurants, cozy cafés, and plenty of character around every corner. Be sure to set aside time to wander, explore, and soak up the small-town charm that makes Watkins Glen so special.

Its tasteful decor, stunning bar, and outstanding wine and cider list are so welcoming! Even before the mains arrive, indulge in their Nibbles. They have olives, Marcona almonds, and local crackers—or their Warm Sourdough Bread from Wide Awake Bakery, served hot with butter!

When it comes to the main event, Graft truly shines. Their locally sourced, farm-to-table menu delivers each dish with refined simplicity and flavor. Their renowned mussels, recommended by many, are every bit as delicious as promised. And the steak? Rich, tender, and unforgettable. Guided by skilled glassmakers, you’ll get hands-on and create your own unique piece. No experience is necessary! And you’ll walk away with a special handmade souvenir that perfectly captures the spirit of creativity and craftsmanship at Corning.

There’s also a great little cafe right at the museum so once you’re done making your own glass and touring the museum, you can grab some lunch right on campus.
