It will probably have you itching to go back again and again! Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply seeking a romantic getaway, this city has something to offer everyone and it will all get covered in this ultimate first-timers guide.
I had the pleasure of visiting Prague for the first time a few years ago during the winter season and if Prague isn’t already magical enough, visit during Christmas time! The city lights up with beautiful decorations, there are incredible Christmas markets, and you can expect to drink lots of mulled wine! In this comprehensive guide, I will take you through Prague’s must-see attractions, hidden gems, and local tips to ensure you make the most of your visit to this fascinating destination. Let’s get into it!
A Little History of Prague
One factor that makes visiting Prague such a special destination is its rich history, which dates back to the 9th century when the first permanent settlement was established. Over the centuries, the city has been ruled by various empires, including the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg Monarchy, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This diverse heritage has left an indelible mark on Prague’s architecture, culture, and traditions.
One of the most significant periods in Prague’s history was the 14th century when King Charles IV established the Charles University and oversaw the construction of the magnificent St. Vitus Cathedral. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Prague became a center of religious and intellectual activity, with many notable figures making their mark on the city.
I always think it’s important to have a bit of historical background information before visiting a new place, so I hope that comes in handy!

What to Know Before You Go
Here are some important things to keep in mind while you start to prepare for your first time visiting Prague.
How Much Time Do You Need in Prague? I’d suggest at least three days to experience Prague’s highlights. Within three days you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the history and culture, visit top attractions, and enjoy some of Prague’s remarkable food. However, if you have more time to spend, four to five days would allow a much more in-depth experience.
What is the currency in Prague? The official currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech koruna (CZK). While most major tourist areas will take credit cards, and a few will accept the Euro, it’s essential to have some koruna on hand for daily expenses such as meals, transportation, and souvenirs, as some smaller establishments may only accept cash. You can exchange currency at banks, exchange offices, and the train station.
Is Prague Affordable? Prague is generally considered a very affordable city, especially compared to other European capitals. Accommodation, food, and transportation are all reasonably priced, and you can find plenty of budget-friendly options without sacrificing quality. Of course, prices can vary depending on the time of year and the specific area you’re staying in
What to Pack If You’re Also Visiting Prague During Winter- as I mentioned, visiting Prague during the Christmas season is magical! But you will need to pack heavier. Layers will be your best friend! Plan to pack sweaters with room for a thermal layer underneath, very thick wool socks, a heavy down coat that preferably goes past your waist, a good pair of gloves, and a nice warm hat
The Best Way to Get Around Prague- if you’re visiting Prague from a different European city or leaving it to head off to another one, the train is the most reliable and efficient mode of transportation. Download the Omio app, which will be super helpful for booking tickets.
While making your way around Prague, Uber is very easy to use and readily available. However, if a place is within walking distance, I highly suggest walking as this is the best way to experience Prague.
Where to Stay When Visiting Prague
When visiting Prague, there’s no better place to stay than Old Town. This is the heart of the city and everything is pretty much within walking distance. Whether you’re looking for a budget option or want to splurge on something fancy, Prague Old Town has an accommodation option for you. Here are three I’d recommend, depending on your nightly price point:
Budget: Hostel DownTown is a great place to stay for those on a budget. While they have shared rooms more ideal for solo travelers looking to make friends, there are also beautiful private rooms, which give it more of a hotel feel. With just a ten-minute walk to Old Town, the location is great as well as the atmosphere. They offer free activities, there’s a common area perfect for meeting other travelers, and they have a communal kitchen for cooking your own meals. To book your stay at Hostel DownTown, click here.
Mid-Range: We personally stayed at The Old Town Square & Parizska Apartments, and I couldn’t recommend it enough. First off, you can’t beat the location! Located right in Old Town, you can expect the most breathtaking views from the bedroom balcony. The room was comfortable, clean, and elegant without breaking the bank. Depending on your preferences, they offer studios or apartment-style rooms with a kitchenette. To book your stay at The Old Town Square & Parizska Apartments, click here.
Luxury: For absolute luxury in the heart of Prague, there’s no better place to splurge than Andaz Prague, By Hyatt. The rooms are elegant, art-deco-inspired, overlooking the charming streets below. They have a signature restaurant and cocktail bar on site. You can also enjoy complimentary mini-bar snacks and luxury toiletries, and there’s a spa/gym. They really have it all! Things To Do While Visiting Prague
Prague truly is a magical city with so much to offer. Here’s a list of things you must do while visiting Prague.
Explore Old Town
Old Town Square, or Staré Město, is the heart of Prague’s historic center. This vibrant square is surrounded by stunning Gothic and Baroque architecture, including the iconic Astronomical Clock, Týn Church, and the Church of Our Lady Before Týn. Take a leisurely stroll through the square, admire the colorful buildings, and soak up the lively atmosphere. It’s also worth the climb to the top of the tower of the Old Town Hall for panoramic views of the city. If you’re visiting during the holiday season, this is also where one of the best Christmas Markets will be taking place.
Walk Across Charles Bridge
Another must-visit attraction when visiting Prague is Charles Bridge, a historic bridge spanning the Vltava River. Lined with statues of saints and adorned with beautiful Baroque architecture, the bridge offers breathtaking views of the Prague Castle and the city skyline. Walking across it is the perfect way to start the day and the earlier you go, the less crowded it may be. It’s also a beautiful place to go for stunning views at sunset.
Visit Prague Castle
Prague Castle is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it’s also one of the largest ancient castles in the world! When visiting Prague, experiencing the castle is a must. This magnificent complex sits atop a hill overlooking the city and offers stunning panoramic views. Inside the castle, you’ll find a variety of attractions, including St. Vitus Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and the Old Royal Palace, which houses the stunning St. George’s Basilica.
Be sure to explore the Golden Lane, a charming street lined with colorful houses that once housed alchemists and servants. The castle also features the Royal Garden, where you can walk past stunning fountains and sculptures. If you’re visiting during the holiday season, there’s a fantastic Christmas market located here as well with over 30 stalls to enjoy, and tons of great food options as well as warm beverages.
Have Brunch at Bistro Monk
No trip to Prague is complete without indulging in a delicious brunch! Bistro Monk is a very popular spot in the heart of Old Town, and for good reason. This trendy restaurant offers a fantastic selection of breakfast and brunch dishes, from fluffy pancakes and savory omelets to hearty breakfast sandwiches and outstanding avocado toast.
Bistro Monk’s stylish interior, friendly staff, and delicious food make it a perfect place to start your day and a must-try when visiting Prague. Be sure to try one of their signature dishes, such as the shakshuka or the avocado toast, which is what I personally got. They also make a fantastic mimosa. Cheers!
If Visiting During the Holiday Season, Enjoy the Christmas Markets
I’ve already mentioned the Christmas markets a few times, but again, if you’re visiting Prague during the holiday season, this is a must! The Christmas markets are so magical and fun to experience, with extensive food stalls, tons of sweet treats, and a never-ending flow of mulled wine. Here are several Christmas markets I would suggest going to if you are in fact visiting Prague during the holiday season:
- Old Town Square Christmas Market- known as one of the best Christmas markets in all of Europe!
- Christmas Market in Wenceslas Square– just a short walk from Old Town, not nearly as crowded
- Prague Castle Christmas Market- this one you can enjoy with incredible views overlooking the city
- Christmas Market at Peace Square- more local than touristy, with lots of traditional foods and decorations
- Christmas Market at Republic Square- on the smaller side, but just as charming and magical. You’ll find plenty of Christmas decorations here!
Have Dinner at Mlejnice
For an authentic taste of Czech cuisine, you cannot go wrong with dinner at Mlejnice. This cozy, traditional Czech restaurant is located right in the heart of Old Town. With its rustic decor and warm atmosphere, it’s understandable why it’s such a popular choice among locals and tourists alike.
Mlejnice is renowned for its hearty and flavorful dishes, such as roast duck, beef goulash, and pork knuckle. Don’t forget to try the delicious dumplings, a staple of Czech cuisine. To complement your meal, you can’t go wrong with a Czech beer or a local wine. Mlejnice offers a truly unforgettable dining experience, and honestly ended up being one of my favorite meals from the entire trip!
Go to the Museum of Senses
For a unique and interactive experience, head to the Museum of Senses. If you happen to get a rainy or particularly cold day while visiting Prague, this is a perfect indoor activity! This fascinating museum is a sensory playground that will stimulate your senses and challenge your perceptions. It was so much fun exploring the different exhibits, which really trick your mind and have you questioning your reality!
From optical illusions and sound chambers to touch and smell experiences, the Museum of Senses offers a fun and educational adventure for all ages. And after visiting the museum, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for the power of our senses.
