This summer marked my first visit to Oneida County, and it far exceeded my expectations. I couldn’t believe how much the county has to offer and how much fun I had exploring it. In this post, I’m highlighting eight amazing things to do that will make your time here unforgettable. Let’s dive in!

First of all, where is Oneida County? If you’re not familiar with this area, it may be your first time hearing of it. Oneida County is located in Central New York, right in the heart of the state. It’s about an hour east of Syracuse, two hours west of Albany, and roughly 4 hours north of New York City. The county sits within the scenic Mohawk Valley region, making it a perfect jumping-off point for exploring both the Adirondack Mountains to the north and the Finger Lakes to the west. Its central location means it’s easy to get to from many parts of the state, whether you’re planning a dedicated getaway or adding it as a stop on a larger New York road trip.

1. Stay at Blueberry Brook Farm
Blueberry Brook Farm Resort is an absolute paradise—a tranquil oasis nestled in nature, blending rustic charm with upscale comfort. Set on over 250 acres of organic blueberry farmland, it offers the perfect escape for anyone seeking peace, beauty, and a touch of luxury. At the heart of the property is a stunning Victorian farmhouse. You’ll find it filled with vintage antiques, bold colors, and thoughtful details. With five bedrooms and 5.5 baths in the main house, there is room for everyone! There’s also a gourmet, chef-ready kitchen, inviting living spaces, and a barn-turned-game room perfect for entertainment.
Step outside, and you’ll quickly see why Blueberry Brook Farm Resort is a destination in itself. Rows of lush blueberry bushes stretch out just beyond the front door, inviting you to pick fresh berries in season. The property boasts over eight miles of scenic hiking and biking trails. There’s also an eco-friendly boardwalk and even a thrilling mountain bike track. It truly is the perfect home base for a trip to Oneida County.
2. Adventure Through Utica Zoo
Utica Zoo isn’t just a family‑friendly outing. It stands as a vibrant institution committed to education, conservation, and recreation, which has been around for over 100 years! Spanning roughly 40 acres of animal exhibits, Utica Zoo features both outdoor enclosures and indoor spaces. There’s a petting zoo, and nature trails as well. Whether you’re admiring majestic lions, spotting red pandas, or watching playful otters, every corner offers a chance to connect with wildlife and appreciate the zoo’s role in conservation efforts.
The foundation of the Utica Zoo lies in community support and engagement. Admission fees, membership programs, special events like Wine in the Wilderness or Brewfest, and gift shop purchases all contribute directly to the zoo’s daily operations and animal care needs. For those looking to get more involved, the zoo provides opportunities to volunteer and to donate.
3. Tour Saranac Brewery
Whether you’re a beer enthusiast or not, a tour of Saranac Brewery offers a captivating glimpse into one of America’s most enduring brewing legacies. As one of the oldest family-owned breweries in the U.S., Saranac has been crafting beer for generations. The 45-minute tour takes you behind the scenes of the entire brewing process. You’ll even get to sample some of the freshest beer straight from the vat. Along the way, you’ll uncover the brewery’s rich history. The experience wraps up at 1888 Biergarten & Tavern. It’s the perfect spot to have lunch and enjoy more of Saranac’s award-winning brews. Visitors consistently praise the tour for its engaging mix of history, hospitality, and hands-on insight, making it a must-do stop in Utica County.
4. Pick Lavender at Spring Creek Lavender
Summer is the perfect time to wander through a flower field, and Spring Creek Lavender is the ideal spot to do just that. This charming, family-run lavender and flower farm welcomes visitors to stroll through fragrant rows of lavender and participate in their U-Pick Lavender season, which typically runs from mid-to-late June through the end of July. Admission is just $7 for adults and $5 for kids. Beyond picking lavender, you can also visit their adorable farm animals, including baby goats that love to be pet and cuddled.
Spring Creek Lavender also offers signature experiences to make your visit unforgettable. You’ll also find creative workshops—like wreath-making and their popular “Floral Nights”—that let you craft something beautiful while surrounded by nature’s charm. Be sure to stop by their shop, where you can browse an array of lavender-infused goodies. From soaps and oils to local honey and handcrafted bath products. It’s the perfect way to bring the calming essence of the farm home with you.
5. Go to Clinton Farmers Market
Clinton is a charming small town in Oneida County, and every Thursday from early June through the start of October, its quaint village comes alive with the Clinton Farmers Market. Now in its 28th season, it runs from June 5th through October 2nd. Showcasing more than 40 local farmers and artisans, visitors can stroll through stalls of fresh produce, locally made goods, handmade crafts, and delicious treats. It’s a celebration of Oneida County’s strong agricultural roots, which also shine through in the area’s many other farmers’ markets, u-pick experiences, local cheesemakers, and country stores waiting to be explored.
After browsing the market, make time to wander Clinton’s downtown streets. The village is home to a collection of charming boutiques and specialty shops, perfect for finding a unique souvenir or indulging in a sweet treat. Step into Almost Local for carefully curated home goods and gifts, browse the stylish selections at Krizia Martin, or satisfy your sweet tooth at So Sweet Candy Shoppe. Whether you come for the market or the small-town charm, Clinton offers the perfect blend of community spirit, local flavor, and leisurely shopping.
6. Explore Root Glen
For those looking to immerse themselves in nature, a visit to Root Glen is an absolute must when exploring Oneida County. This peaceful 7.5-acre wooded oasis is tucked behind Hamilton College’s Admission Office, offering a serene escape of lush greenery. As you wander the paths, you’ll come across one of the largest Norway spruce trees in the United States! Root Glen is also home to the renowned Saunders peony collection, which bursts into a spectacular display of color each spring and early summer.
Root Glen is a nature lover’s paradise, with some 65 species of trees, countless shrubs, and a dazzling variety of flowers spread throughout its grounds. Benches along the trails invite you to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and simply enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.
7. Have Dessert at Silk
Everyone deserves an elevated treat now and then, and Silk delivers just that. Opened in early 2025, this luxe cocktail and dessert bar has quickly become Utica’s new hotspot. Silk isn’t just a place to grab a bite, it’s an immersive experience. From its velvet interiors to its modern, stylish vibe, the ambiance is both chic and glamorous.
Silk’s menu pairs stunning, playful cocktails with spectacular desserts. From whimsical martinis topped with cotton candy to boozy shakes, they have something for everyone. The dessert offerings are equally elevated, and many are prepared tableside for an even more captivated experience. Silk is built for unforgettable evenings, whether you’re winding down with a nightcap, celebrating a special moment, or simply indulging in something truly extraordinary.
8. Tour Munson and Fountain Elms
Founded in 1919, Munson is a regional fine arts center that has become one of Central New York’s cultural treasures. The Museum of Art is home to a renowned permanent collection alongside a dynamic lineup of rotating exhibitions, offering visitors a rich and ever-changing art experience. Its striking International-style gallery building provides a sleek, modern backdrop for the artwork, while the museum’s programming ensures there’s something to inspire and engage art lovers of all ages. From world-class paintings and sculptures to contemporary installations, Munson celebrates creativity in all its forms.
In addition to the main gallery building, Munson also features Fountain Elms—a beautifully preserved Victorian-era Italianate mansion. Inside, you’ll find more gallery spaces as well as restored period rooms that transport you back in time, offering a glimpse into 19th-century life.
