Getting Here by Car: Madison County is conveniently located within a few hours of several major Northeast cities, making it an ideal road-trip destination. Most travelers arrive via I-90 (the New York State Thruway) or Route 20, both of which offer beautiful scenic drives through Upstate New York.

Best Time of Year to Visit Madison County

Madison County is a year-round destination, and each season offers something completely unique! From blooming countryside views to cozy winter escapes. No matter when you visit, you’ll find small-town charm, beautiful scenery, and plenty of things to do. That said, I visited during the fall, and it truly stole my heart. If you can plan a trip during the autumn months, I highly recommend it.

Spring: Trees start to bloom, local farms reopen for the season, and the countryside looks fresh and green again! It’s a great time for scenic drives, exploring local shops, and enjoying quieter attractions before summer crowds arrive.

Summer: Perfect for outdoor lovers! This is the time to enjoy hiking trails, lakeside activities, farmers’ markets, festivals, and warm evenings spent dining on patios

Fall (Highly Recommended!): This is when Madison County truly shines with picturesque foliage, cozy cafés, cider mills, scenic overlooks, and that perfect small-town fall atmosphere.

Winter:  If you’re looking for a calm retreat or a romantic winter escape, this season offers a completely different (but equally lovely) experience. Think cozy cafés, snowy landscapes, and slow-paced getaways.

Where to Stay in Madison County

Madison County offers a range of beautiful accommodations depending on the type of getaway you’re looking for — whether you prefer staying in the heart of town with everything at your fingertips or escaping to a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. Here are two incredible options I personally recommend:

Colgate Inn (Hamilton, NY) — For the Traveler Who Loves a Luxurious, In-Town Stay

If you’re someone who prefers a hotel experience right in the middle of the action, Colgate Inn is the perfect place to call home during your stay. Located in the charming village of Hamilton, this historic property blends classic elegance with modern comfort.

You’ll be steps away from boutique shops, restaurants, cafés, and the beautiful Colgate University campus — making it ideal for travelers who want convenience and walkability. The rooms are elevated and refined, the onsite dining is exceptional, and the atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between upscale and welcoming.

For a luxurious stay where everything you need is right outside your door, Colgate Inn is a standout choice.

Owera Winds B&B (Cazenovia, NY) — For the Traveler Seeking Peace, Nature & a Cozy Escape

If your ideal getaway involves tranquility, nature, and cozy, intimate moments, Owera Winds Bed & Breakfast is the place for you. Nestled in a peaceful, rural setting just minutes from Cazenovia, this B&B gives you the best of both worlds. The serenity of the countryside paired with its close proximity to town!

Expect quiet mornings, beautiful natural surroundings, charming rooms, and warm hospitality that makes you feel instantly at home. It’s perfect for travelers who want to unwind, disconnect, and soak in the slower side of Madison County while still being just a short drive from restaurants, shops, and local attractions.

Where to Eat in Madison County

When it comes to dining in Madison County, you will be spoiled for choice! Whether you’re craving farm-to-table comfort, a strong cup of coffee, or something sweet to round out your day, there’s something for you! Here were some of my personal favorites, which I promise you can’t go wrong with:

The Tavern at Colgate Inn

Located inside the historic Colgate Inn, The Tavern at the Colgate Inn offers an elevated dining experience in the heart of Hamilton. The menu focuses on refined comfort food with seasonal ingredients, creative cocktails, and a great wine list. It’s the perfect place if you’re looking for cozy vibes and a wonderful dinner, or drinks by the fireplace or the bar. The Tavern delivers a memorable meal in a setting that feels both luxurious and inviting.

Maxwells Chocolates & Ice Cream

If you have a sweet tooth, Maxwells is a must-visit. This charming spot in downtown Hamilton serves up handmade chocolates, rich truffles, creative candy favorites, and amazing ice cream flavors!

Flour & Salt

A beloved local bakery and café, Flour & Salt is the go-to spot for breakfast, pastries, and freshly made bagels. Their seasonal baked goods are delicious, and the coffee menu makes it easy to linger and enjoy a slow morning. I particularly loved their breakfast sandwich!

Pewter Spoon Cafe

Located right in the heart of downtown Cazenovia, Pewter Spoon is the cozy, community-driven café every traveler hopes to find. With great coffee, wholesome breakfast and lunch options, and plenty of comfortable seating, it’s the perfect place to take a midday break or enjoy a delicious lunch. From homemade baked goods to warm sandwiches and fresh salads, the menu has something for everyone!

Madison County Distillery

For a laid-back meal with a fun twist, Madison County Distillery is an absolute standout. Set inside a beautifully restored barn, this distillery offers craft spirits, creative cocktails, and a delicious food menu of Mexican-inspired dishes. The atmosphere is rustic and fun, and the owners are some of the most incredible people!

Fun Things to Do in Madison County

Madison County is packed with activities for every kind of traveler. From peaceful outdoor walks and charming small-town exploration to creative experiences, history, and unique local attractions. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or planning a longer getaway, there’s no shortage of fun ways to spend your time here. Below are some of the best things to do that truly highlight the heart and character of Madison County.

Paint Ceramics at Village Clay

If you’re looking for a relaxing, hands-on activity, Village Clay is the perfect spot. This charming pottery studio lets you choose from a variety of ceramics—mugs, plates, figurines, seasonal items—and paint them however you like. It’s fun, creative, and a great way to slow down and unwind in between exploring. You’ll also have a meaningful keepsake from your trip!

Explore Hamilton, NY

The village of Hamilton is one of those places that immediately draws you in with its small-town charm. Stroll through tree-lined streets, browse the local shops, grab a coffee, and take in the historic architecture that makes this college town feel so warm and inviting. The village green is picture-perfect, the boutiques are full of unique finds, and the food scene — from cozy cafés to refined dining — is surprisingly impressive for such a quaint community. It’s easy to spend a few hours here without even realizing it.

Chittenango Creek Boardwalk

For a peaceful nature experience that doesn’t require a full hike, the Chittenango Creek Boardwalk is a scenic and accessible option. This short boardwalk trail winds along the creek, offering beautiful views, gentle sounds of rushing water, and plenty of spots to stop and take photos. It’s perfect for families, casual walkers, or anyone wanting a quick dose of outdoor beauty. The boardwalk is well-maintained and surrounded by lush greenery, making it a simple but memorable stop.

Explore Cazenovia

Cazenovia is one of Madison County’s most charming destinations — a small town perched along the lake with a vibrant mix of boutiques, cafés, historic sites, and local eateries. Spend time wandering the walkable downtown, browsing antique shops, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply strolling along the waterfront. This is a place where you’ll want to slow down and really soak in the atmosphere. It’s picturesque, welcoming, and full of character!

Stone Quarry Art Park

For something truly unique, head to Stone Quarry Art Park, an outdoor sculpture park set across rolling fields and wooded trails. You’ll find large-scale art installations, interactive sculptures, and ever-changing exhibits that blend creativity with nature. It’s a beautiful place to wander, explore, and take in sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

Lorenzo State Historic Site

History lovers will appreciate a visit to the Lorenzo State Historic Site, a beautifully preserved 19th-century estate overlooking Cazenovia Lake. The mansion is stunning inside and out! Visitors can take guided tours that showcase its architecture, period furnishings, and stories of the families who lived there. The grounds themselves are just as impressive, from the garden paths to the stunning lake views. It’s a step back in time and a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
