10 Amazing Things To Do When Visiting Niagara-on-the-Lake

This blog post was written as part of a sponsored media trip with Tourism Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara-on-the-Lake is the definition of small-town charm! With its European-inspired architecture, tree-lined streets, and beautifully preserved heritage homes, this picturesque destination feels like stepping straight into a storybook. During the spring and summer months, the town comes to life with the most gorgeous flower displays, and during the winter months, it feels like a perfect Hallmark town. All you have to do is spend a short time wandering around the heart of Old Town, and you’ll quickly see why it’s considered one of the prettiest towns in Canada.

Don’t have time to read now? Pin this one for later!

Beyond the beauty, Niagara-on-the-Lake offers so much to experience, from award-winning wineries and farm-to-table dining to rich history, live theatre, and scenic lake views. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway from Ontario or crossing over from New York (it’s only about a 50-minute drive from Buffalo!), you’ll find it’s the perfect escape and has a little something for everyone.

After several visits to this charming Ontario town (and with many more to come, I’m sure) I’ve rounded up ten amazing things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake that you won’t want to miss. Let’s jump in!

1. Stay at Woodbourne Inn

The best way to ensure any trip is off to a good start is by staying somewhere truly special and Woodbourne Inn is just that. This beautifully restored, eight-bedroom Victorian-style bed and breakfast blends timeless elegance with the kind of warmth that instantly makes you feel at home. Each room looks like it was pulled from a magazine spread, from the cozy sitting areas to the stunning library. The suites are so comfortable and elegant, with fireplaces, plush bathrobes, and giant soaking tubs.

One of my favorite parts of my stay was the morning ritual: hot tea and freshly baked pastries delivered right to my door, followed by an incredible, chef-inspired breakfast served in the dining room. Every detail at Woodbourne Inn feels intentional and thoughtful, a perfect balance of luxury and comfort.

Located just a short drive from the heart of downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake, it’s the perfect home base for a romantic getaway, a girls’ weekend, or simply anyone looking to slow down and soak in the town’s charm. The only downside? How hard it is to check out when it’s time to leave!

2. Explore Queen Street

Queen Street is the heart and soul of Niagara-on-the-Lake. This charming main street is where you’ll find the town’s best energy — lined with boutique shops, cozy cafés, local restaurants, and some of the sweetest bakeries and gelato spots you’ll ever come across. I’m not sure why desserts seem to be such a big deal here, but trust me, you’ll want to take advantage of them all.

As you explore, you’ll also pass by several of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s most beautiful and historic landmarks, including the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel, the Niagara Apothecary (a perfectly preserved 19th-century pharmacy), and the Niagara District Court House, which dates back to the mid-1800s. And right at the center of it all, the Cenotaph of Niagara-on-the-Lake stands proudly as a memorial to fallen soldiers — a spot you truly can’t miss.

3. Have a Butter Tarte from Niagara Home Bakery

If you’ve never had a butter tart before, or aren’t entirely sure what one is, get ready for a life-changing bite. These ooey-gooey pastries are a Canadian classic: a flaky, buttery crust filled with rich, sweet caramel-like filling that’s the perfect balance of indulgent and comforting.

Niagara Home Bakery makes some of the best butter tarts in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and I can confidently say they’re one of the must-try treats when visiting. Each tart is baked fresh daily, and the moment you take your first bite, you’ll understand why locals and visitors alike swear by them.

I personally love the pecan version but you’ll find several delicious flavors to choose from. Before heading home, I always stop by Niagara Home Bakery to grab a few extras for the road!

4. Create Your Own Flower Bouquet at NEOB Lavender

NEOB Lavender (short for Niagara Essential Oils & Blends) is one of the most peaceful and picturesque places to visit in Niagara-on-the-Lake. While their charming boutique on Queen Street is perfect for picking up lavender-infused products and local gifts, the real magic happens just outside of Old Town at their beautiful lavender farm.

Here, you’ll find rows of fragrant lavender plants surrounded by colorful seasonal flower fields where visitors can wander, pick blooms, and create their own custom bouquets. It’s such a relaxing and fun activity! And a wonderful way to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Depending on when you visit, different flowers will be in bloom. Lavender season typically peaks in late June through mid-July. But even after the lavender has been harvested, the fields remain full of vibrant blossoms. We visited just after lavender season and were spoiled for choice with so many lovely flowers still in bloom.  And we couldn’t have been happier with how our bouquets turned out!

The farm also has a small on-site shop where you can sample their essential oils, soaps, and skincare products made from their own lavender.

5. Have Dinner at Trius Winery

If you’re looking for more than just a meal — something that feels like an experience from start to finish — Trius Winery Restaurant is the place to go. This Michelin-recommended winery and restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake is known for seamlessly blending elevated dining with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. From the moment you arrive, the sleek, modern design and vineyard views set the tone for something special.

The restaurant offers an outstanding three-course tasting menu, thoughtfully curated to highlight seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and perfectly paired with Trius’s award-winning wines. We began our meal with a glass of sparkling wine — such a lovely touch — before diving into beautifully plated dishes that looked like works of art and tasted even better.

Every detail of the experience feels intentional, from the attentive service to the creative presentation. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, planning a romantic date night, or simply treating yourself during your trip, Trius delivers one of the best winery dining experiences in Ontario.

And if you have time, I highly recommend adding a winery tour or tasting before or after your meal. Trius is well-known for its sparkling wines and immersive tasting experiences — including their Insta-famous Trius Red Barrel Cellar and Sparkling House, where you can sip bubbly surrounded by rows of glistening bottles.

6. Go to a Show at The Royal George

Niagara-on-the-Lake has a thriving arts and culture scene, and at the heart of it all is the Shaw Festival, one of Canada’s most celebrated theatre companies. Each year, the festival brings a vibrant mix of productions to life, from timeless classics and witty comedies to lively musicals and modern plays.

One of the main venues is The Royal George Theatre, a beautifully restored Edwardian-style theater located right on Queen Street in Old Town. With its intimate atmosphere and historic charm, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy an evening of world-class performances without the hustle of a big city.

The Shaw Festival runs a full season of shows from spring through late fall, but their holiday lineup is especially magical. Beginning November 1st, this year’s performances include A Christmas Carol and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, both perfect ways to get into the festive spirit. If you’re planning to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake during the Christmas season, this is definitely something you want to put at the top of your list!

7. Enjoy a Taste of Itay at Apertivo

If you’re craving a bit of Italy in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Apertivo is the place to go. One of the town’s newest and most talked-about spots, this casual Italian-style bistro has quickly become a local favorite. The space is bright and inviting, the atmosphere effortlessly chic, and it truly feels like a little slice of Italian comfort.

Their rotating menu features fresh, seasonal options like paninis, wood-fired pizzas, stuffed focaccia, salads, and house-made pastries. Everything is crafted with high-quality ingredients and authentic Italian flair. They also really hit the mark with their expertly brewed espresso, local wine, and a personal favorite of mine, their Aperol Spritz. If you didn’t know any better, you’d swear you were sitting at a café somewhere in Florence.

Apertivo is actually an extension of the fine-dining restaurant Revé, which shares the same space and culinary team. So whether you stop in for a relaxed lunch or coffee break, or decide to come back later for dinner at Revé, you’re guaranteed a memorable dining experience.

8. Have a Fritter on the Lake

One of the most delightful (and unexpected) treats I discovered in Niagara-on-the-Lake was the apple fritter! And no one does it better than Fritters on the Lake. If you’re an apple dessert lover like me (apple pie is one of my favorite things on the planet!), then this will be your new obsession.

Each fritter is handmade to order, filled with pieces of apple, deep-fried to golden perfection, and coated in a sweet layer of cinnamon sugar. It’s crispy on the outside, with a melt-in-your-mouth center that tastes like heaven in every bite!

Located right in Old Town, Fritters on the Lake is a local favorite for both visitors and residents, and the owner couldn’t be more welcoming. It’s one of those small-town spots where the friendly atmosphere makes the experience just as sweet as the treat itself.

9. Go Wine Tasting

If there’s one thing Niagara-on-the-Lake is truly famous for, it’s the wine. This region was practically designed for winemaking — and it shows. Thanks to its unique terroir (the combination of climate, soil, and geography that influences how grapes grow), Niagara-on-the-Lake offers some of the most ideal wine-growing conditions in Canada.

The area benefits from the moderating effects of Lake Ontario, which help prevent frost and extend the growing season, while the Niagara Escarpment provides natural protection and excellent drainage. The result? A rich diversity of grape varieties — from crisp Rieslings and full-bodied Cabernet Francs to the area’s world-renowned Icewine, a sweet, luxurious specialty that put Niagara on the global wine map.

Ravine Vineyard
Marynissen Estates Winery
Between the Lines

There are more than 30 wineries throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake, each offering its own character and charm — from small, family-run vineyards to sprawling estates with elegant tasting rooms. You could easily spend an entire weekend sipping your way through the region.

Some of my personal favorites include:

  • Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery – a fifth-generation family farm with incredible food and wine pairings and beautiful vineyard views.
  • Marynissen Estates Winery – known for its warm hospitality and focus on small-batch, handcrafted wines made with some of the oldest vines in the region.
  • Between the Lines Winery – a relaxed, approachable spot that’s perfect for casual tastings and learning more about the winemaking process.

10. Visit the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum

History lovers, this one’s for you! The Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich heritage of one of Canada’s oldest and most historically significant towns. Located in the heart of Old Town, the museum showcases an impressive collection of early Canadian artifacts, photographs, and archives that tell the story of the region — from its Indigenous roots and early Loyalist settlers to its role in the War of 1812.

The museum features several permanent galleries as well as rotating exhibits, ensuring there’s always something new to see and learn on each visit. Highlights include displays on Niagara-on-the-Lake’s military history, local architecture, and the development of the town as a key hub in Upper Canada.

What makes this museum especially enjoyable is how approachable it feels — small enough to explore in under an hour, but packed with captivating stories and details that bring the past to life. It’s also a great indoor activity for cooler months or rainy days, making it a perfect addition to your year-round itinerary.

Enjoy Your Time in Niagara-on-the-Lake

No matter what kind of traveler you are, a foodie, a wine lover, a history enthusiast, or someone who simply loves a good small-town escape, Niagara-on-the-Lake has something that will leave a lasting impression. Between the world-class wineries, charming main street, cozy accommodations, and endless scenic beauty, it’s a destination that feels both peaceful and inspiring.
