Vineyard Woods: The Ultimate Ohio Wine Country Escape

This blog post was written as part of a sponsored media trip with Visit Ashtabula

If there’s one thing I never get tired of during the summer and fall months, it’s exploring wineries. And one of my new favorite places to do that is Ohio Wine Country. But this time, my wine trip was a little different. It wasn’t just a day of tastings and scenic drives. At Vineyard Woods, you can actually stay on the vineyard itself.

Tucked among rolling hills and endless rows of grapevines, Vineyard Woods offers a collection of luxurious cottages that blend comfort, elegance, and those dreamy vineyard views you can’t get enough of.

This was my first time visiting Ohio Wine Country, and my stay at Vineyard Woods truly exceeded my expectations. In this post, I’ll take you through everything that makes this property so special! From the cozy amenities and serene setting to all the amazing things to see and do nearby. Let’s dive in!

Where is Ohio Wine County?

First off—where exactly is Ohio Wine Country? Believe it or not, this was one of my first real experiences exploring Ohio, and before this trip, I had no idea the state even had a wine region!

Ohio Wine Country is located in the northeastern part of the state, mainly centered around the shores of Lake Erie in Ashtabula County. The combination of lake breezes, rolling hills, and rich soil creates the perfect environment for growing grapes, which is why the area is home to more than 30 wineries and vineyards.

Another reason I fell in love with this area is how accessible it is. Ohio Wine Country makes for an easy and relaxing getaway from so many nearby cities:

  • 2 hours from Buffalo, NY
  • 1 hour from Cleveland, OH
  • 1.5 hours from Pittsburgh, PA
  • 3 hours from Columbus, OH

The Property of Vineyard Woods

One of the things that makes Vineyard Woods so special is its deep connection to the land and the long history that surrounds it. For over 100 years, the 26-acre property has been home to thriving vineyards. Originally planted with Concord grapes, the area has always benefited from Lake Erie’s moderating effect—protecting it from early frost and extending the fall growing season that’s so vital for producing great wine.

Located in the heart of the Grand River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area), the vineyard was later developed by Harpersfield Winery in 2004. They were among the first in the region to plant Vinifera grapes—the same varieties used to produce fine European wines—and to introduce dry red and white wines to the area. Since then, the Grand River Valley has blossomed into one of Ohio’s premier wine destinations, now home to more than 25 wineries, breweries, and distilleries.

In 2015, the current owners purchased the property with a vision to create something truly unique. A luxurious lodging experience set right among the vines. They transformed the 10-acre vineyard and the surrounding 16 acres of forested land into Vineyard Woods, a peaceful retreat where guests can unwind, sip local wine, and enjoy the beauty of Ohio Wine Country from the comfort of their own private cottage.

The Cottages at Vineyard Woods

If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up surrounded by rolling vineyards, Vineyard Woods makes that dream a reality. The property features a collection of beautiful, modern cottages and villa-style suites designed to offer both comfort and luxury while keeping you completely immersed in nature. Each space feels private and peaceful. And every detail is thoughtfully designed to help you slow down and enjoy!

Inside, you’ll find all the comforts of home (and then some). You can expect cozy living areas, plush bedding, fireplaces, and fully equipped kitchenettes. Large windows frame the views outside, bringing in tons of natural light. And the patio became one of my favorite places, both for my morning tea and my evening glass of wine.

The Surrounding Areas of Ohio Wine County

While it’s easy to spend your entire stay relaxing among the vines, one of the best parts about Vineyard Woods is its location—right in the heart of Ohio Wine Country. The property sits just minutes from some of the region’s most beautiful wineries, charming small towns, and local hidden gems that make this area so special.

Ferrante Winery
Kosicek Vineyards
South River Vineyard

Start your adventure by exploring a few of the nearby wineries. Ferrante Winery & Ristorante is a must-visit for its incredible food and award-winning wines. South River Vineyard offers breathtaking views and a tasting room housed in a restored century-old church. This place is seriously so cool! And Kosicek Vineyards is another local favorite, known for its laid-back atmosphere. They even have a private treehouse you can reserve for tastings.

If you’re craving a bite to eat, head to The Bascule Bridge Grille in Ashtabula Harbor for upscale comfort food with a local twist. And for your morning coffee, Harbor Perk Coffeehouse is a cozy stop worth adding to your itinerary.

Beyond the wineries, the area is full of outdoor beauty. You can stroll along Lake Erie’s shoreline, visit the historic Ashtabula Harbor, or enjoy a nature walk at Hogback Ridge. This area has endless options, no matter what your interests are!

Enjoy Your Time at Vineyard Woods

My stay at Vineyard Woods was everything I love about a getaway—peaceful, scenic, and filled with little moments that made me slow down and truly enjoy the present. From sipping wine on the porch to waking up to views of the vineyard, it felt like the perfect escape.

If you’ve been craving a cozy weekend surrounded by nature, great wine, and good company, consider this your sign to plan a trip to Vineyard Woods. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below and as always, happy travels!

My Story:

Born and raised in Buffalo, I moved to NYC in my early 20s where I decided to put my fashion merchandising degree to work. I loved living in Brooklyn, but realized very quickly that the 9-5 lifestyle did not suit me. I used my degree for two years and then ultimately went back to the service industry full-time, which gave me more flexibility to pursue my passion of traveling. (And the money was way better too!)
